Use Your Embroidery Machine to Quilt? You Bet!

!: Use Your Embroidery Machine to Quilt? You Bet!

Quilters who are not already a machine embroidery enthusiast just may find themselves engrossed in the craft once they realize they could incorporate machine embroidery into their quilting.

Embroidery is a traditional way to add special decorative touches to quilts. Whether by hand or machine, a quilter may accent his or her creation with embroidered flowers or other accents. But today's machine embroidery - for those willing to try it - can make quilting quite different.

For instance, a quilter may use a simple embroidery design to let the machine "quilt" the project. Simple one color designs work best, especially for the beginner.

If you want to give this a try, look for an embroidery design that's simple - one that you can visualize stitched into a quilt. Some redwork inspired designs work well. Other simple designs like flowers, circles, sun/moon, houses, hearts - there are all sorts of designs to choose from - can work well as quilting stitches.

Be sure to keep your quilt top's theme in mind. We all know and love the traditional beauty of the double wedding ring quilt. While the quilt top is beautiful with its color variety, the quilt back is just as pretty with its simple stitching that follows the design on the top.

What if you used an embroidery machine to quilt hearts into the quilt design? That one unexpected touch would truly make your quilt unique.

Have you ever needed to throw together a quick quilt? Many quilting pros laugh at the notion, but sometimes we need a quick gift to give and want to make it personal. Lap quilts and baby quilts are very easy to create on an embroidery machine.

Simply hoop your top fabric, batting and backing fabric into an embroidery hoop. Pick a design and get to work! Even if you are quilting solid color fabrics, you can complete a quick, beautiful quilt with the embroidery machine in no time!

Some ideas for a baby blanket for a boy would be to use outlines of footballs, airplanes, trucks, trains, etc., for your quilting pattern. The hardest part of your job will be re-hooping fabric and pushing the "start" button!

Ideas for a baby blanket for a girl include outlines of flowers, baskets, dolls, kittens, etc.

The method above uses machine embroidery on relatively small quilts. Larger quilts can be done the same way or may be quilted with machine embroidery by individual quilt blocks. Experiment to decide which method is easiest for you and remember that the machine embroidery quilting method may change with each unique project.

If you can't find a pattern you like already on embroidery file, ask a digitizer to help you create one. A digitizer takes art images like drawings, clip art images and fonts and alters them via computer to become a stitch pattern. So if you'd like for your family tree wall hanging to be quilted with a tree pattern, a digitizer can create one for you.

Tell your digitizer you want to use the image for quilting. The digitizer will need to plan stitches accordingly.

Quilting is rich in tradition and therefore many true-blue quilters do not like the idea of using machine embroidery to quilt their projects. Isn't it great to try new ideas and techniques? Remember, not to long ago quilters refused to consider machine quilting at all! Embroidery machines will never take the place of quilters, but it can be a fun and rewarding sewing technique to try from time to time.

Sewing Machines - History

!: Sewing Machines - History

Hand Sewing has been practised since the early civilisation about 20,000 years ago. This form of art included animal bones as the needles and the first kind of thread was made using animal sinew. However, iron needles were invented in the 14th century.

In the year 1755 the first patent related to mechanical sewing was issued to Charles weisenthal. This patent was issued to him for a needle that he designed for a machine.

Patent for a complete sewing machine was issued in the yr 1790, to English inventor Thomas Saint. However it was not found weather he had actually built a working model of it. Even a reproduction of Saint's invention design did not work.

A not so well functioning automatic machine was invented by a german, Balthasar Krems, for which he did not get patent, in the year 1810

Josef Madersperger, Australian tailor, in the year 1814 was issued a patent to make several attempts for invent for inventing a sewing machine although they all went unsuccessful.

Thomas stone and James Henderson were issued a patent in the year 1804 for a machine that emulated hand sewing. Scott John Duncan was also issued a patent in the same year for an embroidery machine that had many needles. Both these inventions were unsuccessful

John Adams Doge and John Knowles invented a machine in 1818. This was the first American sewing machine that proved to be an unsuccessful venture undertaken by them.

In the year 1830 Bailorarthelemy Thimonnier, a French tailor, invented the first fully working sewing machine. This machine was so successful that Thimonnire was tried to be killed by a group of French tailors who thought that they would become unemployed as a result of his invention. This machine worked by using a thread and a hooked needle which enabled the same chain to stitch used with embroidery.

Walter Hunt, in the yr 1834 created Americas first successful sewing machine. However due to the fear of unemployment of many people, he did not want to get a patent for it. Therefore the first American patent was issued to Elias Howe in the yr 1846. This machine had a eyed needle which was pushed through cloth creating a loop on the opposite side, then a second thread was passed through thee created loop, creating a lockstitch.

For a long time Elias Howe had to struggle getting patent for his invention. His innovation was used by others for their own inventions. Issac Singer invented the up and down motion mechanism.

Home Embroidery Sewing Machines - For Family Or Home Business

!: Home Embroidery Sewing Machines - For Family Or Home Business

Home embroidery sewing machines are a boon for family stitching and embroidery or for small home boutique business. Unlike industrial purpose embroidery and sewing machines, they are small and portable in size, easy to operate and affordable in terms of prices. They combine the functions of both sewing and embroidery thus ruling out the need for having separate machines for both. At the same time, the computerized embroidery function using digitized design programs allow you to let your creativity flow over your designs and patterns.

Essential Information: If you are planning to get a home embroidery machine, you should know some essential operations required to carry out embroidery using it. First, you will have to get digitized designs available with all leading stores. You can edit these designs or make your own designs if you have the knowledge of computer graphics. The designs come in many different formats and you will have to take care that the one you choose is compatible with your machine.

After getting your design ready you will have to install it either on your home embroidery machine itself or the computer attached to it. When the design is installed the computer will indicate. The next step is to prepare the fabric using a stabilizer if required. Stabilizer is an additional piece of material that you put under or on the fabric to give it strength and stiffness for good embroidery. Stabilizers are also of several type and your users' manual will tell you about the type needed for particular fabrics.

After stabilizing the fabric you place it on the hoop of your machine and refit the hoop onto the embroidery arm, thread the needle and start the machine. The machine stops after finishing one color of the design. Then you thread the needle with the next color and thus the process goes on. When the embroidery is finished, your home sewing embroidery machine stops, you take out the fabric and tear away or dissolve or iron out the stabilizer and your fabric is ready.

Versatility and ease of switchover are very important when you chose a home embroidery sewing machine that gives you the best of both embroidering and sewing.
