Josef Madersperger, Australian tailor, in the year 1814 was issued a patent to make several attempts for invent for inventing a sewing machine although they all went unsuccessful.

Thomas stone and James Henderson were issued a patent in the year 1804 for a machine that emulated hand sewing. Scott John Duncan was also issued a patent in the same year for an embroidery machine that had many needles. Both these inventions were unsuccessful

John Adams Doge and John Knowles invented a machine in 1818. This was the first American sewing machine that proved to be an unsuccessful venture undertaken by them.

In the year 1830 Bailorarthelemy Thimonnier, a French tailor, invented the first fully working sewing machine. This machine was so successful that Thimonnire was tried to be killed by a group of French tailors who thought that they would become unemployed as a result of his invention.
